God Be With Senator Ted Kennedy

Posted by The Dude on May 20, 2008

Politics aside, I was saddened by the news that Senator Ted Kennedy has been diagnosed with a brain tumor. My wife battled cancer at the young age of 23, so I have a great hatred for the horrible disease and I would not wish it upon my worst enemy.
I hope Senator Kennedy is well, and judging by his political career, I know he will fight to his last breath. God Be With You, Senator.

Another One Bites The Dust: Former NY Mayor Ed Koch, A Democrat, Supports McCain

Posted by The Dude on May 20, 2008

The following is a Newsmax interview with the former New York Mayor, Ed Koch, on Hillary Clinton, the 2008 Election, and why he will support John McCain over Barack Obama in the general election.

Photobucket(Come to Daddy, Johnny Boy)

Newsmax: You’ve been an ardent supporter of Hillary Clinton. Do you think that the time has come for her to drop out of the race?

Koch: No, definitely not. I think that she has done a splendid job so far and that the people who want to drive her out of the primaries are anti-democratic. Why shouldn’t the people in every state have an opportunity to cast their vote? I think she’s very brave, and while the chances of her ultimately succeeding are limited, nevertheless she can succeed. Her audience is now the superdelegates.

Newsmax: In the event that she is not able to win the nomination, should she join the Obama ticket?

Koch: If that can be arranged, sure. I think she would be a fine addition, but I hope that she prevails as the presidential candidate. That seems not to be in the cards, but you never know when it comes to politics.

The Wright Controversy

Newsmax: Do you think Barack Obama has gone far enough in distancing himself from the Rev. Wright?

Koch: No one believes that he agrees with the positions of Rev. Wright. The problem is that he sat there for 20 years like a potted plant, and that is a distressing matter that has to be considered when and if he becomes the Democratic candidate.

Newsmax: Are you bothered by his links to Louis Farrakhan and William Ayers?

Koch: Obama has no links to Farrakhan. I am bothered by his not speaking out [about Rev. Wright] for 20 years.

Newsmax: What about his links to Ayers?

Koch: It bothers me that he still has good words for a non-repentant terrorist who says they didn’t bomb enough.

Newsmax: How do you feel about John McCain?

Koch: I know him personally. I like him very much as a human being. I don’t agree with most of his domestic policy positions, however.

Newsmax: Who would be the better candidate against McCain — Hillary or Obama?

Koch: There’s no question that Hillary would be a tougher candidate for him. I think that the odds are that she would beat him, primarily because the Republicans are saddled with a record of non-achievement over the last eight years, and a president who I personally like but who is perceived by, I think it’s now close to 80 percent of the public, as a failure. I don’t think he’s a failure on the issue of Islamic terrorism — I think he has stood up like a giant. But on all domestic issues he has a record of failure.

Newsmax: What about his position on taxes, which is shared by McCain?

Koch: I’m opposed to tax cuts for the wealthy, and I’m one of the wealthy. Tax cuts should be for the middle class and the wealthy should pay more.

Newsmax: Overall, what’s your opinion of McCain and his chances of winning this election?

Koch: I would say that he’s a very decent man. On the issue of standing up to Islamic terrorism, which is the No. 1 issue I think for the country for the next 50 years, he has no equal. With respect to domestic issues he is regrettably doing what President Bush has done on a whole host of important social issues, and basically their approach is a failure — on health insurance, on the environment, although McCain is seeking now to change the position of the administration on that issue, to his credit.

White House to NBC News: F*** You

Posted by The Dude on May 19, 2008

Letter from the White House to NBC News

THE WHITE HOUSE

Office of the Press Secretary

_______________________________________________________
For Immediate Release                     May 19, 2008

Setting The Record Straight:

The following is a letter from Counselor to the President Ed Gillespie to NBC News President Steve Capus:

Mr. Capus:

This e-mail is to formally request that NBC Nightly News and The Today Show air for their viewers President Bush’s actual answer to correspondent Richard Engel’s question about Iran policy and “appeasement,” rather than the deceptively edited version of the President’s answer that was aired last night on the Nightly News and this morning on The Today Show.

In the interview, Engel asked the President:  “You said that negotiating with Iran is pointless, and then you went further. You said that it was appeasement. Were you referring to Senator Barack Obama?”

The President responded: “You know, my policies haven’t changed, but evidently the political calendar has.  People need to read the speech. You didn’t get it exactly right, either.  What I said was is that we need to take the words of people seriously.  And when, you know, a leader of Iran says that they want to destroy Israel, you’ve got to take those words seriously.  And if you don’t take them seriously, then it harkens back to a day when we didn’t take other words seriously.  It was fitting that I talked about not taking the words of Adolf Hitler seriously on the floor of the Knesset.  But I also talked about the need to defend Israel, the need to not negotiate with the likes of al Qaeda, Hezbollah and Hamas.  And the need to make sure Iran doesn’t get a nuclear weapon.”
This answer makes clear: (1). The President’s remarks before the Knesset were not different from past policy statements, but are now being looked at through a political prism,    (2). Corrects the inaccurate premise of Engel’s question by putting the “appeasement” line in the proper context of taking the words of leaders seriously, not “negotiating with Iran,” (3).  Restates the U.S.’s long-standing policy positions against negotiating with al Qaeda, Hezbollah and Hamas, and not allowing Iran to obtain a nuclear weapon.

Engel’s immediate follow-up question was, “Repeatedly you’ve talked about Iran and that you don’t want to see Iran develop a nuclear weapon.  How far away do you think Iran is from developing a nuclear capability?”

The President replied, “You know, Richard, I don’t want to speculate – and there’s a lot of speculation.  But one thing is for certain – we need to prevent them from learning how to enrich uranium.  And I have made it clear to the Iranians that there is a seat at the table for them if they would verifiably suspend their enrichment.  And if not, we’ll continue to rally the world to isolate them.”

This response reiterates another long-standing policy, which is that if Iran verifiably suspends its uranium enrichment program the U.S. government would engage in talks with the Iranian government.

NBC’s selective editing of the President’s response is clearly intended to give viewers the impression that he agreed with Engel’s characterization of his remarks when he explicitly challenged it.  Furthermore, it omitted the references to al Qaeda, Hezbollah and Hamas and ignored the clarifying point in the President’s follow-up response that U.S. policy is to require Iran to suspend its nuclear enrichment program before coming to the table, not that “negotiating with Iran is pointless” and amounts to “appeasement.”

This deceitful editing to further a media-manufactured storyline is utterly misleading and irresponsible and I hereby request in the interest of fairness and accuracy that the network air the President’s responses to both initial questions in full on the two programs that used the excerpts.

As long as I am making this formal request, please allow me to take this opportunity to ask if your network has reconsidered its position that Iraq is in the midst of a civil war, especially in light of the fact that the unity government in Baghdad recently rooted out illegal, extremist groups in Basra and reclaimed the port there for the people of Iraq, among other significant signs of progress.

On November 27, 2006, NBC News made a decision to no longer just cover the news in Iraq, but to make an analytical and editorial judgment that Iraq was in a civil war.  As you know, both the United States government and the Government of Iraq disputed your account at that time.   As Matt Lauer said that morning on The Today Show: “We should mention, we didn’t just wake up on a Monday morning and say, ‘Let’s call this a civil war.’ This took careful deliberation.’”

I noticed that around September of 2007, your network quietly stopped referring to conditions in Iraq as a “civil war.”  Is it still NBC News’s carefully deliberated opinion that Iraq is in the midst of a civil war? If not, will the network publicly declare that the civil war has ended, or that it was wrong to declare it in the first place?

Lastly, when the Commerce Department on April 30 released the GDP numbers for the first quarter of 2007, Brian Williams reported it this way:  “If you go by the government number, the figure that came out today stops just short of the official declaration of a recession.”

The GDP estimate was a positive 0.6% for the first quarter.  Slow growth, but growth nonetheless.  This followed a slow but growing fourth quarter in 2007.  Consequently, even if the first quarter GDP estimate had been negative, it still would not have signaled a recession – neither by the unofficial rule-of-thumb of two consecutive quarters of negative growth, nor the more robust definition by the National Bureau of Economic Research (the group that officially marks the beginnings and ends of business cycles).

Furthermore, never in our nation’s history have we characterized economic conditions as a “recession” with unemployment so low – in fact, when this rate of unemployment was eventually reached in the 1990s, it was hailed as the sign of a strong economy.  This rate of unemployment is lower than the average of the past three decades.

Are there numbers besides the “government number” to go by?  Is there reason to believe “the government number” is suspect?  How does the release of positive economic growth for two consecutive quarters, albeit limited, stop “just short of the official declaration of a recession”?

Mr. Capus, I’m sure you don’t want people to conclude that there is really no distinction between the “news” as reported on NBC and the “opinion” as reported on MSNBC, despite the increasing blurring of those lines. I welcome your response to this letter, and hope it is one that reassures your broadcast network’s viewers that blatantly partisan talk show hosts like Christopher Matthews and Keith Olbermann at MSNBC don’t hold editorial sway over the NBC network news division.

Sincerely,
Ed Gillespie
Counselor to the President

Palestinian Terrorism and its Enablers

Posted by The Dude on May 19, 2008

The following is a post from this blog last week and the ensuing conversation, I had with a person who proves the point I was making. He ignores all the hateful quotes from Palestinian leaders in the past few years, while equating Israeli’s quotes from the 1950’s. Then, he ignores the fact that the Israeli’s offered half their land to the Palestinians, only to be rebuffed by bombs.

The Post in Question Entitled “Inspirational Palestinian Quotes”:

“We Palestinians will take over everything, including all of Jerusalem….All the rich Jews who will get compensation will travel to America….We of the PLO will now concentrate all our efforts on splitting Israel psychologically into two camps. Within five years we will have six to seven million Arabs living in the West Bank and in Jerusalem….You understand that we plan to eliminate the State of Israel and establish a purely Palestinian State….I have no use for Jews; they are and remain Jews.”
– Speech entitled “The Impending Total Collapse of Israel”, Stockholm, Sweden, Jan. 30, 1996

“The Oslo accord was a preface for the Palestinian Authority, and the Palestinian Authority will be a preface for the Palestinian state, which in turn will be a preface for the liberation of the entire Palestinian land.”
– Abdul Aziz Shaheen- PA Minister, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, January 4, 1998

“No one believed him (Arafat) when he used to say it… [but] The choice is not at all between options of negotiation and fighting: you can have negotiations and fight at the same time…the Palestinian people fight with weapons, with jihad, with Intifada and suicide actions… and it is destined to always fight and negotiate at the same time.”
– ANN television, October 7 2000

“There is not a single stone in Palestine that proves the [historical] Jewish existence [in the land].”
– Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, 15 October 2000

The violence “had been planned since Chairman Arafat’s return from Camp David…”
– Imad Faluji, PA cabinet minister, Rally in Lebanon rally, March 3, 2001

“The struggle will continue until all of Palestine is liberated.”
– Yasser Arafat (Voice of Palestine Radio, 11 November 1995)

Peace for us means the destruction of Israel. We are preparing for an all-out war, a war which will last for generations.”
– Yasser Arafat

“When I see a Jew before me, I kill him. If every Arab did this, it would be the end of the Jews
– Mustafa Tlas, Minister of Defense

Thanks to Hitler, of blessed memory, who on behalf of the Palestinians, revenged in advance, against the most vile criminals on the face of the earth. Although we do have a complaint against him for his revenge on them was not enough.”

Leftists Against Free Speech at DePaul

Posted by The Dude on May 19, 2008

(Is anyone really surprised that there is a double standard for conservative and liberal speakers on a college campus?)
Leftist administrators at DePaul University are threatening to cancel a speech by Chris Simcox if the conservatives on campus don’t come up with $2,500 to pay for 20 private security officers.

Simcox, an advocate for protecting America’s borders from unlawful entry, presides over the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps. The lecture was scheduled for Monday, May 19.

Simcox didn’t ask for security nor did the DePaul Conservative Alliance (DCA)—the student sponsors—nor did Young America’s Foundation—the national sponsors. But when school administrators got wind that pro-illegal immigration loudmouths at Our Lady of Guadalupe Mission were planning to protest the lecture, DCA students were told that there needed to be a security presence, and that they had to pay for it

In a press release, Father Jose Landaverde of Our Lady of Guadalupe Mission urged his Chicago parishioners to rally against Simcox’s presence on campus the day of the speech: “There will be hundreds of families walking in prayer who have been directly affected by the Minute Man’s hate campaign against the immigrant community.”  Landaverde’s release, predictably, referred to the border security leader as a “modern day Nazi” and as a “racist,” adding that “Chris Simcox and the Minute Men represent the worst of the American spirit.”

Student organizer Nicholas Hahn, a junior, correctly points out that his club shouldn’t be shaken down for money when the majority of those threatening to protest aren’t even students. “We shouldn’t be forced to subsidize a leftist demonstration,” said Hahn. In fact, why is DePaul even allowing non-students to protest a student-run function on a private campus? University officials can mandate all the security they want, but shouldn’t they pay for it? The school does have a $250 million-dollar endowment, after all.

James Doyle, vice president of student affairs, couldn’t offer a sound rationale as to why he was penalizing the conservative students. For starters, it’s not DCA’s fault that leftist activists are renowned for refusing to protest civilly. He did reaffirm to YAF, however, that members of the DePaul Conservative Alliance needed to comply or else the lecture would be canceled. Doyle also claimed that every student organization bears the burden of security costs. That may be true on paper but not in practice, Nicholas Hahn tells us.

Past liberal speakers at DePaul, including Barack Obama, didn’t attract any vitriolic demonstrations by conservatives and the campus Left wasn’t extorted for cash by DePaul’s administration. John Holden, a spokesman for DePaul, even admitted to the Chicago-Sun Times that he couldn’t think of a single instance where similar financial obligations were imposed on liberal student groups.

Security costs are minimal, if needed at all, when a leftist comes to town.

The topic of illegal immigration is one of today’s leading issues. If DePaul really valued diversity of opinions and free speech, the school would secure the safety of a speaker invited by a university-sanctioned club. Instead, school officials are allowing professional protestors to shutdown an entire campus from even considering conservative ideas on what to do about border security and illegal immigration. This attempt by administrators to soak its students for cash is just a dirty trick to stop Chris Simcox from speaking.

Bush is Right on the Democrats and Appeasement

Posted by The Dude on May 15, 2008

“It is his policies that have produced this vulnerability that the U.S. has.”
-Joe Biden

Was it Bush’s policies that led to 9/11 in the first place? Nope.
Since Bush inacted his current policies, there hasn’t been one terror attack on the U.S. homeland. Instead we are freeing millions of people, while at the same time, drawing all would-be terrorists to points in the Middle East where our military is waiting for them.
Where in all of human history has appeasement stopped genocidal tyrants?

Scum of the Earth

Posted by The Dude on May 13, 2008

There is a special place in hell for people like this:

‘Funeral Day Burglar’ found guilty of 10 counts in Mo.

The Associated Press

A burglar who authorities say used the obituary pages to select his targets was convicted of 10 counts Friday.

Prosecutors say Dane S. Johnson and a co-defendant who pleaded guilty burglarized more than 30 Kansas City-area homes, picking their victims by reading real estate listings and obituaries, hitting model homes, homes on real estate tours or homes where owners would be attending funerals.

In one of the five Platte County cases Johnson was convicted of, a man was at a funeral for his wife while Johnson burglarized his home.

“It’s hard to imagine a more cruel and heartless burglary scheme than this one,” Platte County Prosecutor Eric Zahnd said. “Picking out a home to break into because the owner is at a funeral reveals a complete lack of any conscience whatsoever. Dane Johnson deserves every year he will spend in prison.”

Johnson, 35, of Kansas City, Mo., was found guilty of burglary and stealing and faces up to 78 years in prison. Co-defendant Landon N. Prothro received 28 years in prison in October 2006 after pleading guilty.

Johnson and Prothro were arrested after a 2006 home burglary in which a resident confronted them.

Memo to would-be robbers: Don’t take pictures with possible victims

Posted by The Dude on May 12, 2008

This dude, Andre Smith, is just not very bright.
Photobucket
BENSALEM, Pa. — Police say they had no trouble tracking down a robbery suspect, because the victims had taken his picture while chatting with him at a bar a short time before the theft.
The suspect, Andre Smith, struck up a conversation with a group of women at a bachelorette party at the Bensalem Township taproom early Sunday morning, the township’s public safety director, Fred Harran, said Wednesday. The women were taking photos of each other when Smith jumped in front of the camera, Harran said.
Smith later was ejected from the bar for allegedly harassing customers.
When two women in the group left the bar to go to a nearby convenience store, Smith robbed them of their purses, Harran said. The women recognized Smith - who apparently didn’t recognize them - and gave investigators a copy of their photo, Harran said.
Later Sunday, a detective went around to local apartment complexes looking for Smith and spotted him, Harran said.
Smith was arrested on robbery and theft charges and is being held on $50,000 bail. Electronic court records did not list an attorney for him.
